Rape

The sexual violence of rape is rarely a crime of passion. Rather, it is an aggressive assertion of male power and domination over women and their bodies. Along with recovering from the physical and psychological trauma of sexual abuse, a rape-survivor has to also battle with the culture of victim-blaming prevalent in our society that always places the onus on the woman.

A sad blind spot in our jurisdiction is the lack of classification and criminalisation of forced sex within marriage as ‘rape’.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau, the incidents of rape in India increased by 35.2% in 2013. Overall, 33,707 cases were reported in the country. Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore registered 1,441, 391, and 80 rape cases respectively.
