Dowry Deaths

The pernicious practice of dowry survives in our culture because there has been no major revision in the patriarchal mindsets of people. This tradition has also reinvented itself as even when no explicit demands are made for cash, expensive gifts is culturally expected to be given to the groom’s family. This system causes many parents to see their daughters as ‘liabilities’. Rather than taking a stand against dowry, many conform to the pressure of social expectation and further the grip of this tradition on our society.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau, 8083 dowry deaths were reported in India in 2013. Delhi has recorded 125 cases of dowry deaths in 2013- the highest among 53 cities. Mumbai, Kolkata and Bengaluru registered 21, 15 and 52 incidents of dowry deaths respectively.
